What is the Metaverse?

Metaverse is an old concept, usually relegated to the sci-fi genre. But with the new innovations in technology over the years, the dystopian vision we had in the past, has become real in our present. The future is full of limitless possibilities at this point.

This was exactly what Mark Zuckerberg had in mind when he decided to rebrand his company to ‘Meta’.

The Metaverse of today utilizes AR and VR technologies to create an impressive and immersive environment. Basically making the unreal and digital presence become real and tangible.

Metaverse was made commercial for users years ago with the invention of the Oculus VR headsets, which allowed users to interact with digital artifacts by using their real-life senses. Another example was the internet phenomenon, Pokémon Go, an AR game that took the world by storm.

While these concepts may seem limited to the entertainment media, that isn’t the case today. VR and AR technologies are used in a lot of big fields around the world.

What is the importance of ‘Metaverse’ for Zuckerberg?

Zuckerberg stated that the metaverse was the key to future social interactions. Touting it as the next evolutionary step for communication and connectivity. He stated that with the invention of the mobile internet, the world was pushed into a digital realm of interactivity with one another. He thinks that the metaverse will bring the same level of change to the world. Creating a harmonic balance between the digital and real-world planes.

He expressed that the concept of Metaverse can’t be a single-company endeavor. To expand the progression of Metaverse, all major conglomerates will have to band together to create a conducive environment for everyone on the planet.

From the looks of it, it seems that major companies have already been developing their own products using this phenomenon. Companies like Microsoft, Nvidia, and Roblox have already created extensive digital platforms for users to have the VR and AR immersive experience.

Major gaming companies are also moving along with this narrative and creating such games that have strong 3D graphics and visuals.

This is now a trend, and whoever comes out on top will be the pioneer of the new virtual age.

Is the Metaverse safe?

Since the entire concept is still in the early stages of its development it still has a long way to go before it can perfect itself. In the meantime, concerns for safety are a major contender for all the vitriol Zuckerberg is facing.

For that, the best option to take would be to set a limit to how the new advances will be projected. Creating safety rules and guidelines is necessary if the Metaverse prevails.
